Istochnik

We are a U.S. Based Historical Military Club that portrays numerous units of different countries. Our goal is to be a source of knowledge and positive change in the greater reenacting community. Our club researches and portrays the history of Eastern Europe in the 20th Century, focusing on Russia and the Soviet Union in WWI and WWII. We pride ourselves in recreating history as accurately and authentically as possible. We typically have one big immersion event per year that we take part in planning and partaking in.

Istochnik is strictly a non-political organization. The club is in no way affiliated with any real, radical political organizations, nor do we represent, embrace or advocate, the philosophies and or political goals of any radical, political, racist, antisemitic organizations and/or individuals and/or any supremacist doctrine. Istochnik has no affiliations with the political ideology of the Soviet Union or any other nation we may portray.

We have taken part in and shaped many of the United State’s largest Eastern Front Reenactments, such as Stalingrad (2018-2020), Demyansk (2020), Barbarossa, The Defense of Smolensk (2021), The Rzhev Meatgrinder (2022), Kursk, The Defense of Obayan (2023),  Romanian Spring, The Battle of Târgu Frumos (2024), and soon to be The Battle of Berlin (2025).

Our Group's Mission

We strive to provide a framework for Soviet Reenacting to advance as a hobby and bring together like-minded units into a nationwide group that comes together for events. We strive to be as authentic as possible and work to bring that mentality to every event we attend in order to give reenactors a memorable and immersive experience at our large immersion events. That way, each event feels unique and authentic, leaving a positive impression on both sides of the event. From the smallest public event to the largest immersion event, we work diligently to achieve this goal. - BootSpoon

What is the focus of Istochnik?

We strive to provide a framework for Soviet Reenacting to advance as a hobby and bring together like-minded units into a nationwide group that comes together for events. Our goal is to be as authentic as possible and work to bring that mentality to every event we attend.  Our events are structured and planned to give reenactors the most memorable and immersive experience possible. From the smallest public event to a several-day immersion, we work diligently to achieve this goal.

What does authenticity mean to Istochnik?

Authenticity is a mixture of knowledge, behavior, and material culture that permits us to collectively feel in touch with a particular moment in time. We base all three in primary and secondary sources, tempered with common sense. Above all, we believe the most important factor in authenticity is a willingness to improve with experience, not how much money has been spent. If we cannot perform an impression to this standard, we will decline doing so altogether. As a general rule, we ask new members to start with the basic items at a high level of quality, and build from there.

Where is Istochnik based out of?

Istochnik is a decentralized club comprised of multiple units across the United States dating back to 2018. Most of our members predominate from the midwestern United States, with strong subgroups along the east and west coasts. It started as a group of friends that became a larger organization which continued to grow as more units and reenactors joined and attended events with us.

What type of events does Istochnik attend?

Istochnik units attend all kinds of reenacting events, but our main “bread and butter” are Eastern Front immersion events which brings all members together. We also have units and members that attend a wide range of public events as Soviet and other impressions. Some units also host their own training and hangout style events occasionally.
