Red Army Women
Women were an invaluable part of the war effort during the course of the Great Patriotic War with over 800,000 serving. With all of these new personnel being admitted into the ranks of the military they were of course going to have to be dressed. In this guide we will discuss the beginnings from male uniforms being issued to the development of the first female designated garments.
Stalingrad - 138th Rifle Division
On the night of October 16th-17th, the 138th Rifle Division was ferried across the Volga into the Barrikady Ordnance Factory in Stalingrad. Building by Building, the Germans pushed them out of the Barrikady Factory until, by November 10th, 1942, only a foothold remained. During the Actions of November 11th-13th, the elements of the 650th Rifle Regiment in the Apothecary and the “П” house were eliminated with very few escaping survivors. The Germans drove a wedge in the Soviet Defenses, reached the Volga on a narrow salient, and put direct small arms fire on the 138th Division Headquarters. Of the ~80 defenders of the “П” House, only 6 survived November 13th, 1942. Of those 6, only 2 were able to continue fighting.
Khalkhin Gol
One of the pre-war engagements the Red Army fought in the summer of 1939 against the Imperial Japanese Army alongside Mongolia. Small skirmishes between Mongolian and Manchu cavalry would escalate into a full blown border conflict by July between the USSR and IJA. A cease fire would go into effect on September 15, 1939, resulting in a Soviet-Mongolian victory, pushing the Japanese army out of the area. The engagement would be named after the Khalkhin river, in Japan it is known as the Nomonhan Incident. This specific guide was made by Military History Research Club "Red Samurai".
Border Guards
Organized under the People’s Commissariat for Internal Affairs, or NKVD, the Border Troops of the Soviet Union bore the first wave of attacks in Operation Barbarossa, and represented Soviet power to any civilians living within or crossing the border region. Tasked with patrolling and regulating the borders of the Soviet Union, as well as assisting the Red Army with various security details and counterespionage, Frontier Divisions of the NKVD were the first obstacle which German forces had to overcome on 22 June 1941. This guide is a brief summary of the structure of NKVD Border Guard (PV) troops, their immediate tasks before Operation Barbarossa, as well as a guide for a faithful reconstruction of how NKVD Border Troops would have been uniformed and equipped just prior to the “Crisis Period” of 1941.
